In the early hours of Sunday, November 8, a car plunged into a lake in Barra Mansa, Rio de Janeiro, killing ten people, including four children, according to local police statements reported by Xinhua.
The incident occurred on a poorly lit stretch of road that has no public lighting and no nearby surveillance cameras, Xinhua noted. Police reported that the vehicle was found overturned in the water shortly after midnight.
A passerby saw the overturned car in the lake and immediately notified authorities, Xinhua said. Firefighters later recovered bodies from the water, confirming the fatalities.
Investigators are still trying to determine the exact cause of the crash, with no concrete evidence yet to explain whether a mechanical failure, driver error, or other factor was involved, the outlet reported.
The local police have called the accident a tragic accident “believed to have occurred in the wee hours,” but said the investigation is ongoing and the cause remains unclear.
No further updates on the investigation are yet available, but authorities remain on the scene and are expected to release more information as evidence is examined, Xinhua added.
