Polish police confirmed on Saturday that three more bodies—two women and a man—were discovered in the home of the suspect who carried out a shooting in Krakow’s Main Market Square, TASS reported. The finds were confirmed by the police force and the bodies were believed to be members of the shooter’s immediate family.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke to the news media with a mixture of sadness and resolve, stating:
We have confirmation. Two women and a man died in the criminal’s home. This is a truly exceptional tragedy. There are many signs that they are members of his immediate family.
Earlier that week, political leaders, including the Prime Minister and President Karol Nawrocki, had visited the scene to express solidarity and oversee the investigation, as reported by Xinhua. The National Security Bureau and local police secured evidence and continued to probe the motives behind the attack, with Justice Minister Waldemar Zurek urging the public to avoid obstructing their work.
Investigation and Police Response
According to Xinhua, the police arrested a single Polish gunman, who was described as wearing military-style clothing and using a military-type long gun. The suspect, believed to be 24 years old, was detained after the police chased him through the city streets. Additional firearms and ammunition were seized from his vehicle, and the investigation remains in progress.
Regional police spokesperson Katarzyna Cislo confirmed that the detained man’s identity was established through operational work, as he had no identification documents on him. She also stated that, based on current findings, there was only one perpetrator, although the possibility of a second was not entirely ruled out.
The city’s crisis management team, led by Mayor Łukasz Gibala, urged residents to remain calm and act responsibly. Police are covering the scene, and the investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the full circumstances and motivations behind the attack.
