The escape of Neukgu, a two-year-old wolf from a Daejeon zoo, has sparked a nationwide manhunt and a wave of public interest, with authorities utilizing advanced technology and community involvement to locate the animal.

Neukgu, a young wolf, escaped from the Daejeon zoo in South Korea, initiating a significant search effort involving hundreds of personnel. Despite various sightings and advanced tracking technologies, Neukgu remains elusive. Last week, a young wolf burrowed under a fence at his zoo in the South Korean city of Daejeon and escaped - becoming the country's newest, furriest fugitive.

Despite the more than 300 firefighters, police officers, and military troops deployed to find him, Neukgu has eluded capture for a week and counting.

There were some near misses: the day after his escape, Neukgu showed up on thermal imaging cameras as a glowing blob weaving through foliage near Daejeon O-World, the zoo and theme park from which he had broken loose. However, authorities lost track of him while replacing the battery of the camera drone.

This past Monday evening, a new sighting was reported. The local fire department received word that Neukgu had been spotted on a mountain about 2km away from O-World. A video of the wolf scampering on a road in the dark, illuminated by the headlights of a vehicle, was uploaded to social media.

In response, authorities launched a renewed search-and-rescue operation involving dozens of police officers and military drones. Yet, every time the net seemed to be closing in, Neukgu would vanish again.

The search for Neukgu has drawn significant national attention and community involvement. Following his disappearance, many reported sightings were made, including some misidentifications by local elementary school kids.

One local resident even attempted to aid the search with their own wolfdog, a decision not sanctioned by authorities. Additionally, an AI-generated image of a wolf purported to be Neukgu led to a brief expansion of the search. Following a similar incident in 2018 when a puma escaped from the same zoo and was shot by police, many are concerned for Neukgu's safety amidst fears of history repeating itself.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung expressed his hope that no casualties occur and that Neukgu is safely returned, as concerns from animal rights groups arose about the management and structural defects of the facility.
