OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) — Authorities continued their search on Saturday for the final inmate of three who escaped from a Louisiana jail by removing concrete blocks from a deteriorating wall. Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz stated, 'We would prefer that he surrender himself peaceably, but we will not rest until he is captured.'
Detectives and SWAT officers are pursuing leads for 24-year-old Keith Eli, who has remained at large three days after the escape. Eli was incarcerated on charges of second-degree murder.
One of the escaped inmates, 24-year-old Johnathan Jevon Joseph, was captured after a brief chase and found hiding at a residence. Joseph, incarcerated for rape and other crimes, surrendered after being cornered by law enforcement.
The third escapee, 26-year-old Joseph Allen Harrington, tragically took his own life with a hunting rifle shortly after being located by police, who attempted to coax him out using a loudspeaker. Before the escape, Harrington faced multiple felony charges including home invasion.
This incident marks one of several jailbreaks in Louisiana this year, with a notable escape in May where ten inmates managed to flee a New Orleans jail. This escape prompted a multi-state search and raised concerns about the conditions of detention facilities.
Sheriff Guidroz noted that the escape was possible due to a degrading area of an upper jail wall. The inmates reportedly removed enough mortar and blocks to create an escape route, subsequently scaling the jail’s outer wall using sheets before lowering themselves to the ground.
The sheriff has confirmed that an internal investigation into this incident will take place, underscoring the necessity for improved jail management and safety standards.
